San Diego is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the USA thanks to its year-round temperate climate and its many attractions. There is the downtown Convention Center, pristine beaches, theme parks like LegoLand and SeaWorld, sporting events and concerts at Petco Park or Qualcomm Stadium, and of course the world famous San Diego Zoo. But did you know that San Diego is the perfect home base for day trips through SoCal? San Diego is just a few hours from all sorts of adventures. We manage many vacation rentals in the North County coastal region of San Diego, and there are many places our guests visit throughout the year. Here is a list of a few favorite places:

Los Angeles (2-3 hours away)

Los Angeles has so many sights to see, it could easily be more than a day trip. Some of the attractions include Universal Studios, The Hollywood Sign, The Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theater, celebrity house tours, Rodeo Drive, a multitude of museums, Dodger Stadium, and Venice Beach, just to name a few.

Palm Springs (2-3 hours away)

Palm Springs is known for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in the spring, but it is also home to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Santa Rosa and Jacinto Mountains, 4WD and ATV trails, hiking, golfing, hot springs, Joshua Tree, and even the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway.

Julian (1.5 hours away)

An old mining town famous for its apple pies has mine tours, winery tours, bakeries, and many museums. It is also in a mountainous area that is perfect for hiking, horseback riding and boating. It is a little cooler here so dress accordingly!

Anaheim (2 hours away)

Disneyland, “The Happiest Place on Earth”, is a mecca for most people visiting SoCal. Knottsberry Farm is another (more affordable) amusement park located close by. The stadiums for the Angels and Ducks are always a big hit for sports fans.

Pacific Coast Highway (1-3 hours away)

PCH is known for its breathtaking views as you follow it all the way up and down the western coast. The trip from San Diego to San Clemenete is 1 hour, to Newport Beach is about 2 hours, to Long Beach is 2.5 hours, and to Santa Monica is 3 hours.

Temecula (1.5-2 hours away)

Temecula is a must see for any wine enthusiast or golfer. With 3,000 acres of vineyards, it is aptly referred to as wine country, where they have many festivals and tours. The historic town of Temecula is quite charming and full of shops.

Baja California (1.5-2 hours away)

If you are looking to cross the border, it is only 15 minutes from Downtown San Diego. Rosarito Beach Hotel is located in the resort-like town of Rosarito which is about 1 hour away. Check out the tours for the wineries in Valle de Guadalupe which is 2 hours away.

NOTE: Times vary due to California’s notorious traffic. Plan for heavy traffic and avoid rush hour at all costs. Google Maps is a great tool for mapping your route. Just check to make sure you choose a route that doesn’t include tolls.
